A Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is a process that helps you understand why a child is showing challenging behaviors. Instead of just looking at the behavior itself, an FBA looks at the patterns around it—what happens before, during, and after the behavior.
The goal is to identify the purpose the behavior serves for the child. Most behaviors happen for one of these reasons:
Once we know the “why,” we can create strategies that actually work. An FBA leads to a clear plan that:
An indirect Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) gathers information through a structured parent survey. Parents answer detailed questions about their child’s behavior, including when it occurs, what typically happens before and after the behavior, and possible triggers or patterns. This information helps identify the function of the behavior and guides the development of effective, evidence-based intervention strategies—without the need for direct observation.
After completing the assessment, you will receive a customized report that summarizes the results, identifies the likely function of your child’s behavior, and provides specific, evidence-based recommendations. This report is written in a format that you can bring to your child’s next IEP or 504 meeting. The information can help the team make informed decisions about appropriate accommodations, modifications, and supports to include in the IEP or 504 plan ensuring your child’s needs are more effectively addressed at school.
If your child is experiencing behavioral difficulties at school, I provide a clear and supportive process to help you understand what’s happening and what can be done to help. Here’s what you can expect:
1. Payment and Enrollment
To begin the process, payment is made in advance. Once received, your child’s Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) is officially initiated.
2. Parent Survey
You will receive a detailed parent survey by email. This survey gathers important background information about your child’s behavior, school challenges, triggers, and strengths. Your insight is essential and helps guide the entire assessment.
3. Parent Interview
After the survey is completed, we schedule a parent interview. This conversation allows you to share your concerns, clarify details, and provide your perspective. Your viewpoint is taken seriously and is incorporated directly into the assessment.
4. Customized Report
Using the information from your survey and interview, I create a comprehensive, individualized report. This includes:
5. Ready for Your Next School Meeting
Your completed report is delivered directly to you. It is written in a clear, school-friendly format so you can bring it to your next IEP or 504 meeting and advocate confidently for the support your child needs.
